Filhaal is a 2002 Indian drama film written and directed by Aparna Sen, based on a short story by the same name that she had written earlier. It stars Anupam Kher, Konkona Sen Sharma and Prosenjit Chatterjee. The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival where it won a special mention from "Gopo" magazine. It is about two young daughters who live in an extended joint family with their patriarchal grandfather following the death of their mother. Their lives and relationship with their grandfather and each other is altered when he takes a second wife, who is younger than them. The story takes place in the industrial town of Durgapur, West Bengal. The movie basically focuses on two daughters. Khuku (Konkona Sen Sharma) and Nandini (Sohini Sarkar). Khuku is more settled and stable person while Nandini is very sensitive, innocent girl. The story starts with Khuku returning from Delhi after completing her schooling while Nandini has completed her schooling in Kolkata and returns to live with her parents at home. Their mother passes away due to cancer leaving them alone in the world of their grandfather (Anupam Kher). Khuku takes up Nandini's job selling t-shirts at the market with the help of her grandmother (Prosenjit Chatterjee). Due to some reason, Khuku is not able to go for her job and stays at home. She begins working in the kitchen with her grandmother. The story shifts to Khuku who falls in love with Amit (Narayan Gupte) - a boy from a different caste. Actually she immediately loves him and does not even think about Nandini at all, however she does not tell this to Amit as she likes him so much. Then there comes a time when Amit asks for a date and asks if she can go out with them on that night. She agrees, but she lies to him that Nandini will also go with them. They go out but at the same time, they also catch Nandini coming out of their house. At this point Amit tells Khuku that he knows that she lies to him and he does not want to know about Nandini. She lies to Amit saying that it was just a joke. Amit's mother hears this later and takes it seriously as she also knew the two were talking behind each other's backs, though she did not say anything about this before. Later on, there are sudden quarrels between all the members of family because of worries about Amit's marriage with Khuku. Amit's mother asks them to stop the marriage or else it will be in bad news for them. Amit, in an effort to solve all the problems, proposes to Khuku. She says yes. Now there are no problems between all members of family except for Manju (Prosenjit's wife), who still hates Nandini for everything she had done in her childhood when she was happy and carefree. At this point Nandini comes again when they were alone when Manju suggests that they start living together in one room like rajbansis. However when they refuse to do so, Manju leaves without saying anything at all. cfa1e77820
