Fist of Legend (1994) is the English-language version of the hit Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Wilson Yip, starring Jet Li. This BluRay 720p 800MB Ganool 2 Disc 2 Discs film tells the fictional tale about a Chinese martial artist who immigrates to Japan and attempts to find peace with his Japanese sensei’s son at their shared dojo. The Japanese army, however, is on the brink of war with China and wants to use their dojo as a means of training for war. Fist of Legend is known for its amazing fight choreography and use of color, as well as its highly entertaining story. Jet Li plays Chen Zhen, who had been studying martial arts in Japan under the tutelage of his mentor Huo Tingbao (Yin Tao) and Huo’s son Sokaku (Yin Tao). They run a school together at their dojo and teach students and spectators alike. Chen is a Chinese nationalist who has come to Japan to escape the war against China that is taking place, and he values peace above all else. It is exactly that kind of sentiment that has the Japanese military looking to recruit him for their cause. Instead of accepting and becoming a soulless creature of the military, Chen is provoked to fight them and returns to China to defend his homeland. Chen’s story is told through flashbacks as he reflects on his past leading up to the present circumstances. This is an amazing way for the viewer to visualize what took place in Chen’s past and how it impacts his current situation. These flashbacks help tie together plot points that would otherwise be difficult to follow because they jump back and forth between time periods. The plot itself is very tightly executed and keeps moving forward at a brisk pace, something that many martial arts films struggle with. Jet Li is simply amazing in this film. He has incredible martial arts skills that are on display throughout the film. The fight scenes are very well choreographed and he showcases a wide variety of techniques that give the audience a lot to admire. Every move is deadly accurate and very skillfully executed, down to the smallest details of his body language and facial expressions. As Chen Zhen, Jet Li does an excellent job portraying a character who values peace above all else. He consistently goes out of his way to avoid conflict because he knows what war does to people. When faced with difficult decisions, however, Chen makes decisions based on his own personal convictions rather than based on the opinions of others. He doesn’t feel the need to justify himself to others or rely on their pity. Instead he is strong and confident in his beliefs. One of the most interesting aspects of this film is its use of color. The bright red that dominates the screen as a contrast to the blue sky is a striking contrast that immediately draws your attention to it. If you watch carefully, however, you will see how effective this visual is in conveying mood and emotion throughout the film. In any martial arts film, there are going to be plenty of fight scenes and this one is no exception.
